Mainerz Boutique
Seventeen Years on Main Street
Founded in 2008 by sisters Jessica and Ella Butz, Mainerz Boutique has spent more than seventeen years on Smithers' Main Street. Both sisters were born and raised here, and the shop they built reflects it. Theirs is a women's clothing boutique that stocks Canadian brands, home décor and small luxuries, chosen the way you'd choose things for a friend.
Today the building holds more than the boutique. Seven other independent businesses operate under the same roof, and four guest suites sit on the floor above. What started as one storefront has become a reason to spend a whole day downtown, and for visitors, a place to stay while you do it.
Small business, big heart. Every purchase supports a local dream.
The Founders
Jessica & Ella Butz — Mainerz Boutique
The sisters opened Mainerz in 2008 with a simple idea: create a space where women felt welcome, inspired and excited to shop, where finding the right outfit felt less like a transaction and more like an afternoon with friends. Nearly two decades on, that's still the measure they hold the shop to.
In 2015, fire destroyed their original building. Losing a storefront would end most small retailers in a town of five thousand. Jess and Ella rebuilt, and used the rebuild to make something larger than what burned down, designing a space that could hold other businesses alongside their own.
The buying is still done by hand. Every piece on the racks is chosen for the way people here actually live: collections that work for running errands, going out for dinner, or heading up a trail on a Saturday. In recent years they've extended the same eye to home décor, glassware, textiles, candles and bath goods: the cozy, modern pieces that make a house feel settled.
What hasn't changed is the part the sisters talk about most: knowing their customers. Swapping stories across the counter, marking milestones, being the shop people come back to. As they put it, Mainerz is more than a business to them. In their words, it's family.
Mainerz now ships across Canada and the United States, so the shop reaches well past the Bulkley Valley, but the racks, the fitting rooms and the people behind the counter are still on Main Street, Smithers.
What You'll Find Inside
More Than One Reason to Stop In
Fashion, home and a whole floor of local businesses
Women's Fashion
Tops, denim, dresses, jackets, activewear and intimates from Canadian brands, plus shoes, bags, belts, hats and jewellery.
Home & Little Luxuries
Glassware, tabletop, textiles, candles and décor accents, alongside bath and body goods and everyday cleaning essentials.
The Mainerz Mall
Seven independent businesses share the building: hair, day spa, esthetics, holistic healing, lashes and piercing among them.
More Than a Boutique
Rebuilt on Main Street
Plenty of small towns have watched their main streets thin out. Smithers hasn't, and shops like Mainerz are part of the reason. When the sisters rebuilt after the fire, they didn't just replace what they'd lost. They built a space with room for other people's businesses in it.
Why This Matters
Every independent business under that roof is one more reason for someone to park downtown instead of shopping online or driving out of town. A main street stays alive when there's more than one thing to do on it.
Rooted in Smithers
Beyond the racks, Mainerz contributes to downtown by:
- Housing seven independent local businesses in the Mainerz Mall
- Offering four guest suites above the shop, putting visitors within walking distance of Main Street
- Carrying Canadian brands and shipping them nationwide from a Smithers storefront
Seventeen years, one fire, and a building that now holds eight businesses and four places to sleep. That's not a shop. That's a block.
